Clarice B Pollock's Obituary
“I believe in living my life to assure equal rights and justice for women.”
“Women should strive to be their own person, not try to rely on men. To have a good relationship with men, you must be your own person --
independent and strong. Otherwise, it just doesn't work."
In a world where lip service is often the only participation that some people are able to offer, Clarice Pollock serves as an example of the difference that just one person is able to accomplish.
Clarice has served on the board of the National Organization for
Women, both as a state representative in New York and Florida, and as a
National NOW board member. She was elected president of Florida
branch of the National Organization for Women in 2001.
She was named Westchester County's Woman of the Year in 1988 and
helped found My Sister's Place, a battered women's shelter in
Westchester, New York, which was used as a template nationally for battered women’s shelters.
She founded the Broward Women’s Emergency Fund in 2003.
On Sunday, March 21, 2010 Clarice was inducted into the Broward County Women’s Hall of Fame. This was motivated by her fighting tirelessly for the equal rights of women, striving to improve the status of women and responding to the needs of women who reach out for help.
Pollock, who was born in the Bronx in 1934, credits her parents with teaching her from the start to think differently. She was raised in a Jewish neighborhood, and she said both of her parents were "progressive." Her father was the neighborhood doctor, and her mother was an activist in her school's Parent-Teacher Association. During World War II, her mother opened a child-care center - a concept virtually unheard of at the time -to help working mothers whose husbands had gone off to fight in the war.
Clarice is survived by her 4 children; Dennis, Linda, Patrick and Kevin,
her step-daughter Amy, as well as her sister Kay Korn. We would also like to honor her predeceased partner, Ed Lesen.
She was a very special person. We will honor her and she will be missed!
