George Arthur Fitzgerald Gomes' Obituary
George Arthur Fitzgerald Gomes passed away on Tuesday June 20, 2023, at Florida Medical Center after a brief illness. He was the third child of eleven children and the first boy born to George and Madeline Gomes.
He was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend.
George was born on March 13, 1946 in Georgetown, Guyana and attended Carmel RC. After leaving school George, who was lovingly called Dennis by his family and close friends began his work life at Bookers Universal Store assembling gas stoves. Dennis moved on to the Petroleum Marketing Agency working in a similar capacity before he decided it was time to become his own boss, starting his own gas stove repairs and assembling business. As his business began to grow, he obtained contracts from reputable companies that included Kissoon & Sons.
Dennis migrated to the USA in February of 1980 and worked for Wells Fargo, Willoughby Nursing Home, as well as the New York City Transit.
Dennis made the great personal and financial sacrifice to help his siblings and their families migrate to the United States before his retirement from New York City Transit and relocating to Florida with his family. He was always in the habit of helping others and this is what he would most be remembered for.
Dennis was very family oriented; he could always be found updating his created family tree, adding newborn children as they arrived for different family members. Family members could always count on receiving a birthday or Christmas card and a call from Dennis. He made sure to let you know he was thinking of you regardless of your age.
Dennis was father of Dennis Jr., George Jr., Margaret, Marcia, Anthony, Kevin, Olivia and Alicia, husband of Juliette Gomes, grandfather to 16 and great grandfather to 13, brother of Keith, Desmond, Michael, Clara, Deborah, Thelma, Jean, the late Max, Gillian, Norma and Norma.
He was an uncle to many nieces and nephews, cousin and friend too many too numerous to mention.
