Joyce A. Holz's Obituary
Joyce Annette Holz was born in Miami, Florida on January 31, 1937 to Mary Jeanette (Royal) Rollins (predeceased 2002) and Cecil Alexander Rollins. Joyce had 1 brother, Cecil Harold Rollins (predeceased 1998) and their family was later joined by stepfather Eugene Stamford Cates.
Joyce received her education in the public schools of Miami, Florida and graduated from Miami Sr. High School in 1954. Joyce worked in the banking industry at Riverside Bank for 6 years. She was then employed by The Salvation Army in 1963 by Corps Officer Captain James Osborne. Joyce continued working for The Salvation Army giving 41 years of service in the field of finance until 2004.
Joyce met Edwy W. Holz (predeceased April 2021) at The Salvation Army Miami Citadel Corps. They were married on June 22, 1956 and enjoyed a loving godly marriage for 64 ½ years. They were blessed with two children, Kenneth Alan (predeceased 2007) and Kathryn Ann. Joyce loved her family so much and everything she did in life reflected that love. There was nothing she would not do to help anyone. She was an amazing, wonderful mom, grandma, aunt, great-grandma, neighbor and friend.
A Salvationist from the age of 14, Joyce attended the Miami Citadel Corps. Joyce was faithful throughout the years. She held many local officer positions including Corps Cadet Guardian and Counselor, Bandsman, Sunday School Teacher, Home League Treasurer and Fellowship Chairman, and served as the Young People’s Sergeant Major (YPSM) for over 40 plus years. Joyce was a “shaker and mover” of the Miami Citadel Corps and “she has at one time or another held every local officer position available except Men’s Club president! She epitomizes the very essence of what a local officer should be.” The Miami Citadel Corps, in later years, went through some transitions – Citadel, Hialeah, and Sunset. Joyce played a key role (along with Edwy) in the opening of the Miami Sunset Corps in 1990.
Joyce is survived by daughter Kathryn A. Avery (Carl); daughter-in-law Ann Ritter (Raymond); 10 Grandchildren – Kelli, Andy, Zachary, Jaime, Cassidy, Nicole, Carl Jr., Jonathan, Erik, and Kaitlyn; 16 Great Grandchildren; Nephew Eugene Rollins and Gianna Rollins.
A funeral service will be held Monday, June 28, 2021 11:00am at Alexander-Levitt Funerals & Cremations 8135 W. McNab Road Tamarac, FL 33321. Interment to follow on July 1, 2021 10:30am at South Florida National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Salvation Army Miami Sunset Corps, c/o Captain Alvaro Chils, 8445 S. W. 72nd Street, Miami, FL 33143.
