Katrine Sardinia's Obituary
Katrine Frye Sardinia, age 91, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2025. She was born on August 19, 1933, in Liberty, North Carolina, the second youngest of thirteen children. She was preceded in death by all her siblings, except her beloved youngest sister, O'Nita Mitchell, who survives her along with her husband, Mel Mitchell-Katrine's cherished brother-in-law.
Katrine graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English from Elon University, a milestone that reflected her lifelong love of learning and language. She went on to teach school in Northern Virginia, where she met the love of her life, Frank Sardinia. They were married on June 18th, 1960, and shared nearly 65 beautiful years together. Frank, now 97, survives her, along with the deep and enduring love they nurtured over the decades. They moved to Pompano Beach, Florida in 1977, where they built a joyful life filled with warmth, friendship, and shared passions.
Katrine was a gifted athlete, earning All-State honors in high school basketball for three consecutive years-a testament to her strength, drive, and grace. She and Frank also shared a love for tennis, playing together well into their later years. They often credited staying active as a key to their long and vibrant lives.
She found great joy in art and in expressing her creativity. Katrine approached every endeavor with passion and intention and was known for her inner strength, warmth, and quiet confidence.
She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Katrine is survived by her two sons, Tony Sardinia
(63) of Boca Raton, Florida, and Tom Sardinia (60) of Orlando, Florida; her daughter-in-law, Jessica Rhines, married to Tom; and her three cherished grandchildren: Meigan Sardinia (34), daughter of Tony; and Nicholas Sardinia (21) and Callista Sardinia (18), children of Tom and Jessica.
In the final months of her life, Katrine formed a deep and meaningful friendship with her caretaker, Maylin, whose companionship and kindness brought comfort, laughter, and connection during her final chapter.
Katrine will be remembered for her remarkable spirit, her fierce love for her family, and the grace with which she lived every chapter of her life. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who loved her and in the many lives she touched.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on April 25, 2025, at Alexander-Levitt Funeral Home, 8135 West McNab Road, Tamarac, FL 33321. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth, FL.
