Rosalind Mandell's Obituary
Rosalind Lifsches Garber Mandell enjoyed a long and fruitful life. One of three children born to immigrant parents, she dreamed of being a lawyer or journalist but financially this was not possible. In the early 1940s finding a job in New York proved very difficult for a Jewish woman. At age of 19, she moved to Washington, DC where she found work and her future husband Max Garber. During their 50+ years of marriage, they raised three children together. After serving in WWII, Max earned a living as a butcher and business owner. After 15 years as a homemaker, Ros returned to the workforce as a school secretary for the New York City Board of Education and also served as a union delegate. At 59 years old, while working full time, Ros earned a college degree after 15 years of study. She and Max purchased their first home in the late 1960's in Flushing, NY and later on retired to Century Village in Deerfield Beach, Florida.
After 52 years of marriage Max and Ros divorced. She later married a childhood friend Nathan Mandell. Married for seventeen years, Nat's failing health prompted them to move to Houston to be near Nat's daughter, Jeanne. Shortly after moving Nat passed away and Ros remained in Texas for the next 5 years. At age 96, Ros moved to a nursing home in Somers, NY to be near her family.
Ros was delighted that she lived to see the outcome of the 2020 Presidential election and loved nothing more than a heated political discussion. She was articulate, outspoken, and charming. An accomplished cook, she hosted wonderful family holiday dinners. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, writing and playing Scrabble. She loved working on projects, setting goals and achieving them. Her positive and upbeat attitude gave joy to those around her.
She leaves behind her daughter, Janet Garber, son-in-law Sheldon Hanner, son, Gary Leonard Garber, daughter-in-law, Eileen Brandes Garber, stepdaughter, Jeanne Mandell and two grandsons, Elie Alexandre Fouere and Michael Jonathan Garber. Sadly, her son Steven Howard Garber, passed away earlier this year at the age of 69.
