Sanford Forrest's Obituary
Sanford Forrest, “Sandy”, Age 87, passed away peacefully at his home in Fort Lauderdale, FL, on Monday October 30, 2017. Born in Yonkers, New York to Gussy and Jack Friedman. Sandy was a vivacious child. Eight years later he became older brother to Melvin Friedman, a role that he took very seriously. At age 23, after completing his bachelors at NYU College of Engineering, Sandy was drafted into the Army, where he was responsible for recording events. He was awarded honors from the Korean Government for his exemplary work on the Operation Learning Project, which raised funds to provide books and learning materials for Korean children.
Later as an engineer in the Garment Industry, he set up systems for measuring production, which also provided an opportunity for workers to increase their earnings by increasing their production. He was invited to lecture to share his work and made a recognized impact on the garment industry. He also created and patented engineering inventions.
Sandy was equally as successful in his personal life. He was happily married to the love of his life, Joan Forrest on Christmas Eve, 1950, for 67 years. He was a doting father to, Allen Forrest, Daryl Forrest, Caryn Forrest, and Marla Forrest. and a loving grandfather to his grandchildren, Jordana Forrest, Jesse, Forrest, Jenna Forrest-Kokonas, Mark Kokonas, Travis Riley, Madeline Riley, and Rae Ron. He was blessed just this year with his first great-grandchild Kooper Kokonas.
Well known by friends, family and residents at Willowood for his quick sense of humor and ever-present smile. He was a life long lover of musicals and poetry. His memory will forever live on in the words of some of his favorite poems like, “ If I had but 60 cents, or Charge of the Light Brigade.” I know anytime I hear the music from Man of LaMancha, that Sandy is now dreaming the impossible dream.
