Sheldon Weingarten's Obituary
Sheldon Weingarten passed away peacefully on September 2, 2023 with loved ones by his side.
He is the loving father of Jason (Ginger) and Lauren (Jack); the proud grandfather to Giselle, Dylan, John, Davis and Whitney; the wonderful big brother to Phyllis (Cary); and the caring husband of Karen.
Shelly, as he was known by his friends and family, was born in the former Czechoslovakia in 1946. His parents, Martin and Valerie, were freed from the concentration camps in the Holocaust the year prior. Wanting a better life, they immigrated to the United States and arrived at Ellis Island when Shelly was about a year old. The family settled in Chicago and he made many good friends growing up, including at Von Steuben High School.
As a child of the 60’s and 70’s, Shelly enjoyed discussing politics and movements, over delicious food, while listening to folk music and jazz. He was never shy about sharing his opinions. During that time he and his wife Sue, started a family and raised Jason and Lauren together in the Chicago suburbs.
Professionally, Shelly spent most of his career in the men’s clothing business with his longest tenures at Davis for Men and Gentry. He enjoyed being part of wonderful teams that provided quality products to people that valued style.
In his free time, Shelly would often pick up the guitar and play his favorite songs, create pieces of art, and read. He also loved to cook while listening to his favorite jazz stations.
Later in life, Shelly moved to Fort Lauderdale to help his mother in her later years. After his mother’s passing, he met and married Karen, with whom they shared a love of music, the Arts, nature, and travel adventures.
A celebration of Shelly’s life will be planned at a future date.
