I chose not to lose my mom, and instead to gain an angel. In my mind, my heart, and my life, she is still present to this day — and as wise, compassionate, and stubborn as ever.
— Kevin Hart
Sylvia was a loving mother, devoted wife, doting grandmother and proud great grandmother who came into my life when I was about 12 years old, when I was being looked after by her wonderful, kind parents, Esther and Bob. She became a surrogate mother when I truly needed one and through me,Sylvia met Herb, the romantic love of her life. Almost exactly 60 years ago, it was love at first sight. I know, I was there and even my naive eyes could see the sparks fly.
About 4 years later, Sylvia and Herb married, moved to Honduras and united Herb’s 4 children who had been split up for a decade. Think about how fearless she was to start a home on a dirt road in a town that had more horses than cars, no Shul, and she had to learn Spanish while maintaining a thriving business in Miami Beach. Her brilliance, resilience, perseverance, creativity, resourcefulness and love allowed us to enjoy an unforgettable adventure in a tropical rainforest with sporadic running water (that needed to be treated to drink), through sickness and health, and even during war time and peace.
Those who had the honor of knowing Sylvia would agree that this beautiful woman with an angelic singing voice was blessed with other gifts as well. She was a superb cook, homemaker and astute businesswoman who convinced me and my siblings that she was supernaturally clairvoyant. How else would she know (on the exceedingly rare occasion!) that we misbehaved or that her husband was ill even while she was far away in Florida. But maybe she wasn’t blessed with Extra Sensory Perception but rather remarkable intelligence that gave her the ability to hold her own against all comers when it came to Scrabble and Trivia Pursuit, etc., and starting and running successful businesses.
Sylvia’s generosity and truly nurturing personality was not limited to immediate family members either. She was known in San Pedro Sula for her work with the less fortunate, especially with Salvadoran refugees who were incarcerated during and after the war.
When their oftentimes idyllic life in Honduras finally came to an end, more adventures and traveling awaited Herb and Sylvia. Living and working in numerous countries including Guatemala, Belize, Europe and South Africa she always maintained her ties to South Florida until they settled down in Bal Harbor and then Bellagio as their primary residence. While Sylvia and Herb had countless, happy adventures to share, they were happiest when they were with their beloved children and grandchildren and eventually great grandchildren.
In every life comes tragedy. Losing her sweet daughter, my sister Jeanie, was too much for this big hearted Earth Mother. They spoke nearly daily for years and years before Jeanie’s passing and Sylvia oftentimes commented how bereft Jeanie’s passing left her. So many of us feel that way. I prefer to believe these two angels are now reunited, catching up, speaking frequently and watching over their beloved children and offspring. In my heart and my mind, I will continue speak to you both as well. Just ignore the tears in my eyes and the catch in my voice. I miss you both and will love you forever.
XO,
Sam
