Zodelma Susy Azucena Howie's Obituary
Zodelma “Susy” Azucena Howie passed away on May 16, 2026, at the age of 89.
Susy was born on August 31, 1936, in Guanacaste to Juan Meza and Francisca Duarte. She was the fifth of six children. Growing up in Costa Rica, she loved spending time on her grandfather’s ranch with her siblings.
She later moved to Guatemala with her mother and three of her sisters. During her time there, she welcomed her three children: Ulrico, Gunther, and Guisela.
Ready for the next chapter of her life, Susy moved once again with her mother, sisters, and children, this time to Key West, where she quickly became one of the most beloved people on the island. While working at the Boca Chica Naval Bar, Susy met the man who would become the love of her life. In January 1971, Susy and Ronnie were married.
Susy loved spending time with her family and everyone she cared about. One of her favorite pastimes was cooking, and her recipes, especially her beef soup and picadillo, became staples at family gatherings. No one could leave her house without being fed and having a good time. She also never passed up an opportunity to dance with whoever happened to be nearby.
Susy and Ronnie became regulars at their local Lester’s, where the staff quickly fell in love with her. The same thing happened everywhere she went — restaurants, doctors’ offices, grocery stores. Everyone who met Susy adored her.
Throughout her life, Susy spread love and compassion to everyone she encountered. She greeted everyone warmly and quickly made friends wherever she went. She lovingly adopted many people as her son, daughter, sister, brother, or family in one way or another. The love she shared with others was truly one of a kind, and she lit up every room she entered. Her devotion to her husband, family, and God inspired all who were blessed to know her.
Susy is survived by her husband of 55 years, Ronald; her daughter, Guisela Buttimer; her grandchildren, Morris (Jennifer) McCool, Randy (Amy) Morris, Peter (Brandi) Buttimer, and Iliana (Kershane) Buttimer; her sister, Miriam Maddux; as well as many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and beloved family members.
In addition to her parents, Susy was preceded in death by her sons, Ulrico Livingston and Gunther Livingston; her son-in-law, Peter Buttimer; her sisters, Pura, Jenny, and Alba; and her brother, Edelberto.
We ask those who want to come and pay their respects to please wear colorful clothing.
