Merle always welcomed me into her home with a smile. She would engage in conversation with interest and humility. I will remember her for her kindness.
Two years after we both retired, Merle and I met for lunch at Little Havana in Deerfield Beach. We ate yummy fish outside and talked a lot and took a selfie with the rooster. I was privileged to know Merle for at least 35 years! She had a wonderful sense of humor and was so knowledgeable about all things “Special Education.” Dylan was her true joy and through her Facebook photos I got to watch him grow up, leave the nest, and get married. I really looked up to her in many ways. A wonderful friend and human. This is such sad news.
Merle was so special and gave me STAR advice when I was starting my first teaching job in Broward County. we knew each other 35 years. We had lunch at Little Havana 2 years after we both retired. It was sweet to watch Dylan grow up, leave the nest, and get married through our Facebook friendship. I am so sad to learn of her death. Thank you for sharing the sad news.

I have fond memories of teaching alongside Merle at Ely High School in the 1980’s. She has left us too soon and will be missed. Rest in peace dear Merle.

I always loved the smile on Merle's face as she looked at her beloved son, Dylan. She was so proud of all his accomplishments.
